The Cuckoo's Egg

This book brought to my attention the apparent need for greater collaboration between local, state, national, and international officials. I have found that in our modern era our laws were never intended to handle the unforeseen advances in telecommunications. Regrettably, I feel that our current government has taken a step in the wrong direction with laws such as the Patriot act which deny citizens virtually every right to privacy. I feel that our current system has made me slightly paranoid about our nations "cyber cops" similar to Stoll near the beginning of the book. My greatest fear is that government officials, ignorant of technology and it's finer details, will repeatedly commit inexcusable offenses to the masses in their attempt to "protect" our rights.

  1. Do you want to give the cyber cops more power (increased collaboration) or do you want them to be more restrained in what they do. If you are paranoid about their power, a division of responsibilities and jurisdiction can protect us. The main problem in the book wasn't collaboration, it was that only the FBI had jurisdiction and they didn't want to handle the case.

  2. Your post reminds me the pattern of our recent presidents in freely assuming certain powers of war which were only granted Congress. I guess the question is, what do you do when the people who should be exercising their power don't want it? Also, I'd hope that the solution wasn't restricted to more or less power. I guess, I actually approve of our current model with it's complicated jurisdictions, and I would simply hope that these agencies were proficient enough at working with each other to catch criminals.
